Building Structures (ARC 2523)- Project 1 Fettuccine Truss Bridge

Learning Outcome

- Able to evaluate, explore and improve attributes of construction materials
- Explore and apply understanding of load distribution in a truss
- Able to evaluate and identify tension and compression members in a truss structure
- Explore different arrangement of members in a truss structure

In a group of 5, we carried out precedent studies truss bridges, both Boscawen-Canterburry Bridge and Healdsburg Memorial Bridge.

Then, we designed few prototypes and constructed a fettuccine bridge of 600mm clear span and maximum weight of 150g.

Other than aesthetic value, the design of the bridge must be of high efficiency. In order to achieve higher efficiency of the bridge, we analyzed and evaluate the material strength (tension and compression). By knowing the strength of fettuccine, we determined which members to be strengthened. Structural analysis of the truss were done. The critical members of the bridge were strengthened.

Final Model

Weight : 112g
Efficiency: 57.10
