BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 2 [ARC 2513]- Project 1: Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structure

Learning outcomes

• Apply construction system in design.
• Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
• Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

In this project, we constructed model of a tower with a maximum base of A5 size paper out of popsicle sticks. The binding agents are limited to toothpicks, thread and pins only. It must not more than 100 pieces of popsicle sticks.

The Popsicle tower aesthetic design was based on a colour-coded structure concept. A specific colour was used to represent each of the structural elements such as beams, columns, and bracings.

15 yellow popsicle sticks and 1 dark brown popsicle stick were used to represent beams. 24 orange popsicle sticks and 24 dark brown popsicle sticks were used to represent columns and diagonal bracings. The structural design was conceived to give the skeletal structure a modular look, whilst giving it a lot of strength and stability.

We were exposed to different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials basic detailing, construction joints and material application.

First Attempt
Dead load: 53.75 kg,
Model Height: of 35 cm
Model Mass: 75g
Efficiency Rate: 25.08

Second Attempt
Dead load: 82.25 kg
Efficiency Rate: 38.4

Here's a video for the model test :)
