Learning Outcomes
1. Identify and understand relevant information related to fire protection, air-conditioning and mechanical transportation systems including related regulations.
2. Understand how each building services functions including the connections and position of different parts and equipment as well as space implications.
3. Propose appropriate building services systems for a given type of building.
The Inspiration
For design inspiration, we visited PJ Hilton Hotel to perform a thorough study and analysis of the following services systems employed in the building and document the findings accordingly:
i) a centralized air-conditioning system
ii) active and passive fire protection system
iii) mechanical transportation system
The Intervention
For design intervention, we visited SMK Bandar Sunway which does not employ any centralised air-conditioning and mechanical transportation system with only basic fire safety and protection system.
We proposed a design intervention towards the original design. assuming the owner of the building wish to air-conditioned most of the rooms including the corridors and upgrade the fire protection as well as mechanical transportation systems. It is to accommodate spaces and components required without removing any of the main rooms and spaces for the installation of the following building service system:
i) a centralised air-conditioning system
ii) active and passive fire protection system
iii) mechanical transportation system
