Building Structures [ARC 2522]- Project 2: Extension of a R.C. structure

Learning Outcomes

• Produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study
• Explore and understand the concept of structural analysis
• Identification of structural components
• Recognize, Execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design
• Produce a structural proposal

  Working in a group of 8 members, we chose an existing semi-detached house to carry out appraisal of the building structural system. Structural elements of the building were identified and measured drawings were prepared. Then, structural plans of the case study were proposed.

  The structure of the semi-detached house was analysed thoroughly. The load acting on the structure were identified and quantified.

The renovation works to the building are to meet the following criteria,
a. The area of renovation should not exceed 30% of the existing floor area (max 150 meter square)
b. The renovation should be sideway.
c. The renovation should be of two storeys.

  The extension framed by using appropriate structural members such as columns, beams, slabs, or trusses. Last, beam analysis and column analysis was carried out from roof to ground level.
