ARCHITECTURE CULTURE AND HISTORY 1 [ARC 1313]- Project: Precedent Study

This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through the study of existing buildings, students are able to inform and expand their own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts.

In this project, my group mates and I conducted analysis on Abbaye-aux-Hommes through drawing, model-making, essay-writing.

We learned that the abbey church was founded by Duke William the Conqueror. It was the product and prosperity and power of the ducal Normandy. Abbaye-aux-Hommes was built in Romanesque period,  circa 1060 known as Saint Etienne is one of the Normandy’s finest and well-preserved churches in terms of proportion in Caen, France.

Learning outcomes

1. Recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods.
2. Exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
3. Classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Analysis Presentation Board

We are required to provide drawings such as floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches to communicate the depth of your analysis of the building and find as much information on the assigned building as possible to provide an in-depth analysis of the project.

Analysis should include:
 Concept analysis (building concept and/or architect concepts)
 Building massing analysis (structure, geometry)
 Circulation Analysis
 Spatial Organization analysis (public vs. private, symmetry & balance, Unit to whole, Repetitive to unique, Additive and subtractive, Hierarchy)
 Building section analysis

Model

The model is 30 cm x 30 cm in dimension with 10 cm depth.

Material: Balsa timber
