In this project, my group mates and I conducted analysis on Kuala Lumpur Central Nodes through site mapping, building inventory.
We focused on mapping, studying and analyzing modern architecture development. Through the study of existing buildings, students are able to exemplify and classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally whilst expanding our own architectural vocabulary and develop design concept.
Individually, we produced a building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships through drawings, written and verbal presentations.
Learning outcomes
1. Recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods.
2. Exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
3. Classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.
Phase 1. Site Map
In a group, we are required to investigate, examine and map out development of a city from a pre-modern to present times through a chronological survey based on evidences gathered and to highlight significant structures / built forms that served as landmarks or identifiers. Detail accounts of factors which have influenced architectural design throughout the periods are done as well as images, photographs or other related source of information.
The site map were presented on 2 A1 boards, containing information of the site; it’s historical and current conditions, a timeline showing how the site developed, drawings, photographs and other related information.
Phase 2. Building Inventory
Based on the site map, we chose several buildings within the site for inventory documentation. We were provided with inventory forms which we need to fill in with detail information of the selected buildings. Collectively, we documented all the buildings within the particular site.
Phase 3. Building Analysis
Loke Yew building had been selected as my individual project for an analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. This task required me to obtain site plan, building plans, sections, elevations and details drawings of the building and its components. The analysis had been presented on 1 A1 board with all related drawings and information.
Phase 4. Verbal Presentation
Presented my investigation and documentation to the class through site map, inventory and building analysis.
